    Homeschool Documentation Made Easy

    On September 25, 2008

Record keeping is important not only for the sake of regulations. It is also an exciting way to record and document the learning process of the child. When most of the learning is done through play and there is no clear cut index of topics that have to be covered, it is necessary for the parent to keep some sort of a log which records the child’s progress.

A topic that frequently comes up in meetings that deal with homeschooling is documentation and what is necessary related to. The importance of record keeping cannot be ignored. It is legally required in some States, but also provides important landmarks and progress in your child’s learning experience. An interest guided homeschooling approach means that the topic of studies is far ranging and varied to each student’s area of interest. Thus, it can be a real challenge to write reports for the school district, when it is difficult to classify learning into nice neat boxes.

The records you keep can be as simple as a daily journal, or as elaborate as a software program. If you participate in a support group, you probably have set forms and requirements. But even so, keeping track of daily work makes reporting easy and efficient.

There are various record keeping methods used by various homeschools. Some of the more popular ones are:

Journal: This can be maintained by the teacher or the student. This basically aims to keep a log of what was learned and what was done. Recording memorable events that happened in the course of the year is a great way to reminisce later on.

Daily planner: Lay out the plans and the assignments for the week in a teacher’s planning notebook. Check each item as it is covered. Maintain a separate area where any additional things can be recorded. This includes educational trips, visits and videos etc. Any extra topics that were covered are also recorded in this area. Make a summary every quarter.

Portfolios: This consists of a collection of varied materials that show what the child has achieved and done during the course of study. Portfolio assessment is a very effective way to chart the child’s progress. It gives structure to the otherwise loose and flexible form of schooling called homeschooling. A drawing portfolio will consist of some paintings or sketches that are considered the best in that quarter. A language portfolio may consist of essays, stories, reading-logs, spelling samples or letters. Progress in mathematics, fine arts, history, science and social studies can all be recorded this way. The biggest advantage is that portfolio assessment places control in the hands of the children. Having a tangible record of what they have established eggs them on to greater heights.

Other than the above-mentioned systems, there are also purchased record-keeping systems that lay out a good checklist. Some of these allow one to personalize the organizer. Irrespective of the methods used, record keeping in one form or the other is essential. Your child’s future may well depend on the well-maintained record that you have meticulously kept over the years.

How To Build Your List Through Article Writing

Article writing is a powerful and effective way to build your list, whether you’ve thought about it or not.

Article directories are a place where you can submit your articles written on your topic of expertise or interest, where other newsletter editors visit to find content for their newsletters. Article directories also attract other readers as well.

Increasing viral marketing efforts through article writing is a powerful method. Your articles in a very real way are a means to prove your expertise in your area of knowledge about the topics you write about.

So how does article writing help build your list exactly? By the resource or bio box that you attach to the bottom of every article. This included a short description about yourself and your business along with the URL of your website, thereby driving traffic to your site.

It is strongly suggested that your resource box URL links to your mailing list’s landing page where you can get your visitor’s name and email address, which will in turn help you build your mailing list at no cost.

If your articles are worth publishing, newsletter and webmasters will republish your articles on their sites and newsletters with your resource box to be seen by their readers and subscribers. Viral marketing for you!

To start with, submit your articles to article directories and submitter sites that have been around and are established. Do a simple online search for these as there are many great ones out there to choose from.

Discover the True Purpose Behind Free For All Sites

    On August 17, 2008
    Categories: Building Traffic
    by Rachel Rae

Free For All Sites (FFA) are sites where a person is able to post a link with a short ad to a website, many times it also posts to many other similar sites at the same time, creating free advertising and free backlinks to the poster. When someone posts a link, they are agreeing whether they know it or not, to receive a confirmation email back from the site’s owner.

What seems to happen though is many people see this as free advertising and get angry when, not only do they not see a flood of sales come pouring in, but they start receiving other people’s offers. I know when the first time it happened to me, I couldn’t figure out what was going on and was frustrated at the results.

Let’s look at what just happened and the true purpose behind a FFA site. The real reason for a FFA site is so the owner can promote his products and services to the poster. They are not just being nice people who give free advertising space to others, if it really worked, they’d be diligent in doing that. When people post on their page, that’s the bait so they can send their confirmation emails with their offers to you.

The confirmation emails you receive are not considered spam, as you had agreed to receive them for the privilege of posting on their site. Who reads these ads anyways? Is posting to FFA’s a total waste of time then? Not necessarily, as you will get an occasional sale, people do go back and post repeated ads and sometimes take a quick look while trying to see where their links are.

To get the real benefit of FFAs for your business, get your own FFA site so you can promote to those who post to it. Shop around among the many resources of them to find which suites you best. Most have paid and free versions, but the saying “you get what you pay for” comes to mind here. I have done several paid versions that more than compensated for their cost.

You can promote any product through this method; information products, crafts, vitamins, whatever. You could have the very best on the entire internet, but if nobody sees your offer, it’s not going to get the sales you desire. It takes traffic to get sales. These sites are options for driving those numbers to your site. Free classified ads sites are also in this same category with the same purpose and can be worth pursuing.

Things To Consider Before Hiring A House Cleaner

    On August 07, 2008

    by Rachel Ray

Have you ever thought about hiring help to clean your home? Some feel it is a luxury, while others consider it to be survival.

The reasons people hire help to clean their home vary widely. Some people work such long hours at their careers they find all their free time spent in doing chores. Many times it is worth every cent to hire it done in order to truly have your free time, which creates a better work life balance.

Some people hire help because of health issues, or the elderly many time do for assistance with larger tasks, and some people simply because of time restraints in their lives.

Here’s a couple of suggestions while considering your best option. Do you prefer a cleaning company, or would you prefer a sole business owner who does their own cleaning? There are pros and cons to both.

The advantages to hiring a cleaning company is if you are not happy with the work, you have recourse in complaining to a supervisor. They many times also have extra training for their employees. The negatives can be that sometimes they are more expensive in that they have more overhead they have to cover, and if you find someone you like, you may not get them the next time.

On the other hand, sole business owners who do their own labor many times are a wonderful option. It’s their reputation on the line and many times go out of the way to make sure their customers are happy. Check if they are bonded or insured. If not, you have to decide it that’s a risk you’re willing to take or not.

It’s important to interview your potential person or company. Here’s some good starting questions. What are their rates? What does that include? Do they clean while you are home or away? Do they supply the cleaning supplies? Get references and check them.

Be clear about what you’re looking for. Which tasks do you want done, how often? Think about any other expectations you would have.

Sometimes its surprising how reasonable it is to hire someone, especially in regards to the free time they’ll gain out of the deal. Perhaps it might mean cutting some expenses somewhere else to make it fit into the budget. Many people who hire someone say that it is worth every cent.

Create a Division Between Work and Family Life

    On July 30, 2008

    by Rachel Rae

There’s a common phrase, “what happens at work stays at work, what happens at home stays at home”. Not an easy thing to do, but especially for the one who’s work is at home. These people have unique challenges to find balance of these two roles.

Many people work long hours in their jobs or home business and find they don′t feel like they have much left over for their families after a long day. Yet, the families are the priority, how to give your best to both can be a struggle.

Strategy One: Use the drive home to focus on coming home.

Granted this is sometimes easier said than done, but you can use your commute time profitably, and is more geared toward those working outside the home. Begin to actively let go of the work day’s problems knowing they’ll be there tomorrow, and look forward to time with your family and what may be next.

Two: Come up with a Schedule

This strategy is for people that work from home, where keeping work and family separate is even more of a challenge. It is so easy when you work from home to work way more then you would at a traditional office, because you have everything right there. You need to create a work schedule, and this schedule is going to have to take two things into consideration, demands of your work and demands of your family. You may find that you need to be working early in the morning or after the kids go to bed. Create a schedule that you can stick to and that will work so that your business isn′t suffering and neither is your family.

Strategy Three: Get Separate Phone lines

Fortunately for me, with my business I rarely have to be on the phone, almost all communication with clients is done via email. But if you are finding that you are getting business phone calls at all hours, having a separate number for them to call is great. You also have the option of making your cell phone your business phone and the home phone is personal. This way when your work day is done you can put the phone down and walk away from it. You can also separate the rings for people you know personally and business so you don′t accidentally answer a business call after working hours.

Tip Four: Create a space that is separate from the house.

Do you have an extra room that could be used exclusively for this purpose? I know it’s not always possible. Perhaps you could get inexpensive room partitions to create a work area. It’s important that you try to make a space so that your roles can be separate and you can walk away from it when you need to. It also helps to keep family out of your work area as well.
