    Finding Short Term Health Insurance

    On August 19, 2008

The day comes when you lose your job and, as a consequence, you lose your health insurance plan. Fortunately, temporary health insurance is one thing that can keep you afloat until you [get|secure|find a new position. A temporary health insurance policy will cover your health care requirements from the date on which you lose your job until you become eligible for benefits from your new employer.

But just where do you start looking for a short term health insurance policy? Like a lot of people today, your first stop will probably be one of the major internet search engines and these will provide you with a laundry list of directories. These directories each give you a list of insurers which offer temporary health insurance and even a hendful which will actually explain precisely what it is. Knowing just what temporary health insurance is and, equally important, what it is not will help you in shopping for the right policy and keep you from getting scammed.

First, every state has its own brand of temporary health insurance policy to assist you in holding onto the health insurance from your previous employer. For instance, in Minnesota the plan is known as a Cobra Plan and covers you until you have a new job. While we are on the subject, state law also states that an employer must notify you of your eligibility for Cobra coverage.

Commercial short term medical insurance plans generally run from one to twelve months, though many providers restrict their plans to six months, and will provide most of the same benefits which are provided on their long term plans. The greatest difference that you will see is that the contract is not renewable and if you want to hang on to your coverage you will need to take out a further new policy. Bear in mind that this type of policy is intended only for short term use and not for long term use.

Some things which will most likely not be covered are preventative care and wellness checks and short term health plans will also not usually cover dental or optical care. They are also normally very strict on denying cover for pre existing conditions. It is also usually possible to get cover extended to your spouse and children. Lastly, you will find that the majority of plans will be priced from around $25 to $100 a month.

Bearing this in mind, you can begin to trawl through your search results and examine the lists of companies to discover one which meets your requirements.

Yet another very good place to look for cover is to your current home or car insurance provider as it is possible that they will also carry a medical insurance policy which you can get. And, if you are getting the policy through your existing insurance company, there might well be an additional discount available to you for having multiple plans with them.

Your local phone book may also list a number of places from which you can buy temporary health insurance cover in your area.

Eat Your Way To Lower Blood Pressure

    On August 19, 2008
    Categories: Diseases and Conditions
    by Donald Saunders

High blood pressure is at epidemic proportions in the United States today with more than 65 million people suffering from high blood pressure and another 45 million having a condition known as pre-hypertension. High blood pressure is a symptomless disease which increases your risk of heart attack and stroke and you could very easily be suffering from it without any knowledge of it until it is too late.

Of course there are medicines available which can help in lowering blood pressure, but many of these are accompanied by side effects and, even though some people might have to take medication in the short term to control high blood pressure, a much better solution is to control your blood pressure naturally if you can.

For most of us high blood pressure is linked to weight and diet and this is a big problem today when two out of every three Americans are overweight or obese. In addition, the majority of Americans get way too much salt in their diets and not enough of the large number of other beneficial vitamins and minerals which can actually reduce blood pressure. In short, it is possible to eat your way to a lower blood pressure, if you know what to do.

In truth, it is often possible to lower your blood pressure quite quickly if you change your diet and begin to take some exercise. That said, if you’ve not taken any exercise for a long period of time you shouldn’t suddenly begin a vigorous exercise program and it’s always a good idea to talk to your doctor before you start any exercise program.

First of all though let’s talk about some things which you should avoid and top of the list is salt. Salt is one of the main culprits in today’s high blood pressure epidemic. An excess of dietary fat is also an offender because it encourages arteriosclerosis, weight gain, and other problems which result in high blood pressure. Thus, two things which you should avoid in your diet are salt and excess fat, principally saturated or trans fats.

So, what types of food should you have in your diet to help you in lowering your blood pressure? Potassium is one of the major substances which is lacking in today’s American diet and which is especially beneficial for your blood pressure. It help to reduce blood pressure just as sodium assists in raising your blood pressure and so getting enough potassium in your diet can help even out blood pressure.

It is very easy to get enough potassium into your diet by simply adding plenty of fresh or frozen fruits and vegetables, providing of course that they have no added suger or salt. Even though this may seem bland to some people, it is one of the best ways to ensure that you regularize your blood pressure. Naturally of course, at the same time you also want to cut down on the salt to no more than the recommended daily intake of approximately 2400 mg each day. A very good way to achieve this is not to add any salt at all to your diet because natural and unprocessed foods contain enough salt and, if you feel you need to add flavor to your food then simply try herbs and spices.

Magnesium and calcium are two other minerals which can help to reduce blood pressure. Both calcium and magnesium are considered calming minerals and the majority of Americans do not get enough of them in their diets. dairy products which are low in fat are a good source of calcium as are legumes, nuts, and dark and leafy green vegetables. You need to try to get a balance of approximately two parts of magnesium to three parts of calcium. Foods such as soybeans, sesame seeds and white beans not only contain a lot of calcium and magnesium but they are also excellent sources of potassium.

Lastly, make sure that you drink enough water and get enough fiber in your diet. Fiber helps to clear toxins and unhealthy substances from your body and it also helps you feel full so that you are not tempted to eat too much.

Make The Party Truly Special With A Personalized Baby Shower Gift

    On August 19, 2008
    Categories: Family
    by Donald Saunders

There are various beautiful and effective methods of personalizing a baby shower gift and the results can change a gift into something really special.

A gift could be personalized by putting a sticker on the base, embossing it on the side or stitching it across the top. And your addition could show the baby’s name, the parents’ names, the grandparents’ names or the name of the giver.

A baby shower gift can even be decorated with a meaningful logo, phrase or photo. The text may be chosen by the giver or conceived by the gift’s designer. A logo may be created by a professional designer or by the person who gives the gift. A photo might be chosen from a range of professional stock images or supplied and incorporated into the baby gift.

Personalization literally transforms an otherwise impersonal gift into a keepsake that will be treasured forever. It offers a reminder of festive events and provides an incentive to hand the gift down from generation to generation. Monogramming can add names to items made of cloth and printing can personalize anything that is capable of absorbing ink.

A Slumber Bear, for instance, makes for an ideal present. Babies love the soft, teddy bear design and parents feel safe knowing the present is durable and made from good materials. In later years both parents and the then baby can look back on the baby shower at which the gift was received and personalization will make the memories all the sweeter.

Yet another great gift is a Dilly the Duck cashmere booster pillow that provides the ideal opportunity to stitch on the baby’s name. In the years to come this present will evolve from a loved nursery item to a reminder of those youthful years. Years after it has been received both parties can remember back to the many happy times spent reading a storybook while the young one’s head nestled into it.

And storybooks themselves can be personalized in the shape of a Fairy Tale book that carries all manner of individual markings. For stories that are written by the child’s parents, they can be signed with the author’s name and date. When the book is purchased then the gift giver can sign and date the book and print the name of the recipient on the flyleaf. These methods and many more can turn a simple storybook into a cherished souvenir of childhood.

Yet another gift that allows personalization is a birth plate on which to paint the baby’s name across the rim or on the bottom. The best choice is perhaps to print the baby’s name, birth date and weight along the rim to mark the birth of that very special individual who entered your life on that day.

Have You Considered Applying For A College Credit Card?

    On August 17, 2008
    Categories: Credit
    by Donald Saunders

Just As its name says a college credit card is a credit card which has been specifically designed for college students and is possibly better known as a student credit card. Student credit cards are meant to let students learn all about handling credit cards and to experience their benefits early in their lives. In reality, a college credit card is an introduction into the world of credit cards and, even though a student might have experienced using a supplemental card on a parent’s account, it is the first credit card which the student will have in his own name.

In general terms college credit cards operate in precisely the same way as other credit cards but there are some differences which you have to know about. These differences arise because the credit card companies are taking something of a risk by extending credit to people who will generally not have any credit history and thus they need to protect themselves against the higher chance of debt on college credit cards.

The first important difference is that the credit card companies require that a parent or guardian co-signs the student’s card application, so that the parent or guardian is aware that the student is applying for credit, and will also require the parent or guardian to stand as guarantor for the account. Thus, should the student default on the card the parent or guardian will be legally liable to make good on any debt.

The second major difference with a college credit card is that the credit limit is generally set at a lower level than that seen on other credit cards and is typically set at between $500 and $1,000. This limit is also set at a reasonably low level because the card issuers consider this to be adequate to meet the needs of the vast majority of college students.

Finally, the credit card companies also offset their risk by setting the interest rates on college credit cards a little bit higher than normal in an attempt to deter students from overspending on their cards and to encourage them to keep their spending within the amount which they can afford to pay off each month.

On the surface college credit cards may not appear terribly attractive to people who are accustomed to handling standard credit cards but in reality they can be a very useful tool for teaching young people to handle credit responsibly and carry the additional benefit of providing students with the ability to build up a good credit record, which will be very helpful after leaving college.

College can be a very expensive time for a lot of students and there are not many students who will make it through college without a mixture of parental support, scholarships and grants, federal loans, privately arranged loans and working part-time. This can be hard to manage and far too many students have problems dealing with this and end up with no option but to refinance their loans, generally through student loan consolidation. When we add a credit card into the equation we might just be providing the straw that breaks the camel’s back.

Whether or not college credit cards are a truly good idea or simply another marketing ploy by the credit card companies is something which you will need to judge for yourself however, whatever your view, they are without question something you must be approached with both eyes open.

With A Cluster Headache You Will Experience True Pain

    On August 17, 2008
    Categories: Health
    by Donald Saunders

Cluster headaches are arquably one of the most painful conditions known and their only one and only saving grace is that they are fortunately relatively rare. For example, though roughly one person out of every ten of the population suffers from migraine headaches, only about one person in three hundred will ever experience a cluster headache.

Cluster headaches generally appear as what a lot of sufferers describe as a hot and stabbing pain behind only one eye or in the region of the temple. Their key characteristic however is that they follow a timetable and appear at roughly the same time every day often for several days, weeks or months at a time. They also have a tendency to strike without any warning, unlike migraine headaches which are often preceded by several different warning signs.

Noone is quite sure what causes these extremely painful headaches though research favors the theory that they are the result of abnormalities in the hypothalamus. The hypothalamus is a small gland that plays an important role in regulating your body’s internal clock and this could explain why these headaches appear at approximately the same time every day.

Another feature of cluster headaches that distinguishes them from migraine headaches is that are far more commonly seen in men than in women. When it comes to migraines about three times as many women as men are afflicted but, in the case of cluster headaches, studies indicate that they are up to eight times more prevalent in men.

Treatments for ordinary headaches are virtually always ineffective for cluster headaches and this is one type of headache for which you have to seek advice from your doctor.

One frequently used treatment is that of inhaling pure oxygen for several minutes once the headache begins. This particular form of treatment will not work for everyone but normally works extremely well for those people who do find it is helpful. It cannot however be used to prevent a cluster headache and is only effective in treating a headache once it has started.

Another extremely effective treatment is the use of a new form of drugs called triptans which are at present being used for the treatment of migraine headaches. These drugs must however be taken in a very fast acting form to be effective and this generally means taking them in the form of a nasal spray. However, in many cases cluster headaches can cause inflammation of the nasal passages rendering this sort of treatment difficult. When this happens, triptans can sometimes be given by injection.

At present there are no terribly effective preventative treatments available though a few sufferers do find that calcium channel blockers work fairly well. In addition, in very severe cases surgery might be considered as a last resort treatment and a number of neurological procedures are available including procedures which block certain nerves and which remove part of the brain.

Sleep Apnea Symptoms Can Be Difficult To Recognize

    On August 17, 2008
    Categories: Health
    by Donald Saunders

The symptoms of sleep apnea are most commonly seen in men over the age of forty who are overweight although they can appear at any age in both women and men and are being seen increasingly in children.

The clearest symptom of sleep apnea is snoring which is difficult to spot yourself and usually needs to be pointed out to you by a sleeping partner. There are many reasons for snoring and the fact that you snore is not in itself an indication that you have sleep apnea. However, maost sleep apnea sufferers do snore.

The next most obvious symptom of sleep apnea is undue daytime tiredness. People who suffer from sleep apnea stop breathing frequentlywhile sleeping and the body’s natural reaction is to wake you sufficiently for you to begin breathing again, but not enough for you to be conscious of the fact that you are being awakened. This of course means that your sleep is constantly interrupted and very light so that you do not get the deep sleep which your body needs. The result of this is that you grow more and more tired during the day.

If left untreated the effects of sleep apnea begin to emerge and you will start to experience additional symptoms that could include headaches (especially in the morning), irritability and depression. You could also find that you are beginning to gain weight.

A further less obvious indication of sleep apnea is an increase in blood pressure which can give rise to several cardiovascular problems. should you be one of the increasing number of people who are now monitoring their own blood pressure at home then you will pick this up fairly easily but, it not, it will not be discovered unless and until you visit the doctor’s office to have a routine physical examination.

Another symptom is that of growing difficulties with memory retention and learning difficulties. Once again this is not something that it is easy for you to see yourself but others around you might well notice that you are not as quick on the uptake as you once were.

Lastly, a number of sufferers from sleep apnea will notice a drop in sexual function that can result in impotency.

Each of these symptoms by themselves could ne indicative of just about any problem you can think of. If you start to notice these symptoms appearing together however there is a better than even chance that you have sleep apnea and you should consult your physician and consider being tested for sleep apnea.

The Risks From Prostate Cancer And How To Reduce Them

    On August 17, 2008
    Categories: Cancer
    by Donald Saunders

For several years now there has been considerable argument about prostate cancer and the subject of preventing prostate cancer specifically remains to some extent controversial. Although, as with the majority of cancers, men do not themselves cause their own prostate cancer, there are clearly a number of risk factors for developing the disease and there is much which can be done, if not to actually prevent it, then without doubt to reduce your risk of developing it.

The first step in preventing prostate cancer is simply to understand that you are at risk of getting the disease and also to understand precisely what the various risk factors are.

There is no question that men who have a family history of prostate cancer are at higher risk and that the risk for somebody with a close relative suffering from prostate cancer is approximately twice that of somebody without any family history. If you have two close relatives then this risk rises to around five times that of someone with no family history and if you have three close relatives your risk reaches a staggering ninety-seven percent.

The problem here is that a lot of men do not know their family history, frequently because a lot of grandfathers, fathers or brothers have died as a result of other illnesses without ever being aware that they had prostate cancer. This occurs because prostate cancer often develops late in life and can be a very slow growing cancer. As a consequence there is a good chance of individuals developing other conditions together with their prostate cancer and it is these other conditions which ultimately cause their death.

So, if you do not know your family history, then a good point at which to start is to check things out if you can. If it is not possible, then it is probably a good idea to err on the side of caution and believe that the risk might be there rather than simply assume that you are in the clear.

The next very important factor is race. African American men for instance are at more risk than Hispanic men who, in turn, are at greater risk than Caucasian men. The risk for an African American man is roughly sixty percent higher than that for a Caucasian man.

Another risk factor is diet and men who are living in Western countries such as the the US or the UK are at increased risk because of the high fat levels in many Western diets. Here for the first time is a risk factor which you can actually do something about and reducing the fat in your diet and eating such things as more fresh fruit and vegetables can lessen your risk quite considerably.

Now, at this point we start to run into difficulty because, beyond the principle of lowering levels of fat in your diet, views start to differ when it comes to looking at other aspects of the diet that might be helpful in prostate cancer prevention.

There is little if any doubt that levels of such things as vitamins and minerals in your diet can have a significant affect on your general health and will certainly have a role to play in prostate health. But, working out just which vitamins and minerals have a part to play is a difficult matter and is a subject all of its own.

Learn How To Profit Wildly From Forex Trading

    On August 17, 2008
    Categories: Currency Trading
    by Donald Saunders

Although many people have heard of Forex trading, few people really understand just what it is all about and will probably believe that it is something for ‘big business’. Nothing could be farther from the truth and an increasing number of private people of quite modest means are trying their hand today.

There are many hundreds of currencies but only a few are traded on the Forex or FX market which is mainly concerned with seven major currencies. Forex trading is the purchase and sale of these seven currencies in pairs so that you may for example purchase Canadian Dollars by selling Swiss Francs. The principle is simply to purchase a currency when its price is depressed and then sell it when the price rises so that you make your profit. This of course sounds simple enough but, in reality, it is not quite as simple as it sounds and you will need a reasonable amount of knowledge before you venture into the market.

The FX market is the world’s biggest financial market and is open twenty four hours a day around the world, which is one reason why so many people are attracted to it. In the past currency trading was very much the domain of the major banks and financial institutions but now even individuals can join the fray provided they do so through a broker.

Therefore, if you are thinking about getting in on the act then you should start by seeking out some training and either get yourself on a first rate training course or start by apprenticing yourself to a seasoned trader.

It is critical that you understand the operation of the currency market before leaping in as it is an unpredictable market with few if any boundaries or barriers and it is very easy to lose a fortune if you do not know what you are doing.

You will have to start by coming to terms with trading psychology as even the most successful traders will make and lose money as the market moves up and down and it can be a roller-coaster ride at times not simply in financial terms but also mentally.

You will also also to get to grips with the tools of the trade like charting and mapping which are done nowadays using quite advanced software packages. As with the majority of software the results you get back depend very much on the data that you feed in and it takes time to learn to master these tools.

Discipline is another extremely important aspect of trading and is something that does not come naturally to most of people. It is all too simple to get carried away when you are trading profitably and to over-reach yourself only to be brought back to earth with a thud. Establishing your own trading principles and rules is vital for your financial success.

If you are tempted to jump in head first then take a moment to have a good hard think before doing so. Very few novices who attempt to go it alone without the necessary training are successful and, even if they do meet with success in the short term, they nearly always crash and burn before very long.

There is nothing better than a good grounding in the principles of Forex trading and the confidence that it will give you will be mirrored in the success that you enjoy.

What Can You Expect Following Weight Loss Surgery?

    On August 15, 2008
    Categories: Health
    by Donald Saunders

Gastric bypass has been around for more than fifty years now and, while there are of course risks most patients are very satisfied with the results and enjoy a a vastly improved standard of living. But there is a price to pay and you will have to follow a very different lifestyle after surgery which could be very difficult unless you are prepared for the change.

Some of the post-operative changes are obvious as the basic principle behind gastric bypass surgery is to markedly reduce the volume of your stomach and to physically restrict the amount of food that you can eat. This simply means that those days of sitting down to a big meal are gone.

But some of the other consequences of obesity surgery are less obvious.

For instance, even in small quantities the days of eating foods that are high in sugar or fat are also over. The penalties for eating foods of this nature can be very unpleasant as their rapid absorption in your newly shortened digestive tract can lead to very unpleasant feelings of faintness.

You will also discover that the change in your eating pattern leaves you very short of water so that you must get used to drinking small quantities of water throughout the day if you are to avoid dehydration.

This is all very well but just what should you expect from weight loss surgery when it comes to weight loss?

Results will of course vary from one person to the next but it is important to begin by looking at just how post-operative weight loss is measured.

Here you need to begin by assessing just how much excess weight you are carrying and this is done by working out your ideal weight. Measured in pounds, for a man this is calculated as 106 plus 6 times your height in inches less 60. For instance, for a man who is 5ft 10ins tall the ideal weight will be (106 + [6 x (70 - 60)]) which works out at 166 pounds. For a woman the principle is the same but this time a women’s ideal weight is calculated as 100 plus 5 times her height in inches less 60.

Thus, if we take the example of our man above and give him a weight of 366 pounds then he is carrying 200 pounds in excess weight. Weight loss is then measured in terms of the percentage of excess weight lost over time. Therefore, if after 6 months he has dropped 100 pounds then his weight loss will be 50 percent.

In general you could expect to shed around 50 percent of your excess weight within the 6 months following surgery climbing to approximately 70 percent after one year and to in the region of 80 percent at the end of 2 years. For the majority of patients however weight loss will stop after 2 years and indeed some long-term weight gain will appear. Longer term weight re-gain is normally about 10 to 15 percent of your initial excess weight.

Again, generally speaking, if you are very overweight you will drop a greater percentage of your excess weight (perhaps as much as 90 to 95 percent) while if you are not so heavily overweight you may drop as little as 60 percent in the 2 years following surgery.

You will almost certainly not lose 100 percent of your excess weight and are not going to get to your ideal weight through surgery. As a consequence, it is occasionally said that weight loss surgery is not a complete success. In spite of this the vast majority of patients would not agree with this statement and will tell you that the change in their quality of life is simply unimaginable.
