Ways To Sell Your House Fast Without Burying A St. Joseph Statue

I became a permanent resident of Canada in September 2000 and since then I have moved twice. A townhouse was my first home and after a year, I moved to a raised ranch type house. After 5 years, I moved to a 4 level back split house which is only about a 5-minute drive from where I used to live.

I didn’t have any problems selling the 2 houses I lived in. When they were both up for sale, I did not bury a St. Joseph statue upside down as was customary. But take note that in both cases, I sold the 2 houses only after 10-12 days at the price I wanted.

Of course, being a St. Joseph devotee, I prayed for St. Joseph’s intercession but instead of burying a St. Joseph statue, I did something else.

I have a blessed St. Joseph statue so I placed it by the window in my dining room, facing the front lawn and the street. I then wiped a bit of the Holy Oil of St. Joseph on it. I don’t know why. I just felt like doing it. I prayed that my house be sold quickly to the right buyer at the right price and asked God to answer my prayer according to His will. I then prayed a nine-day novena to St. Joseph. And what happened was my first house was sold after 10 days and my second house after 12 days!

There is really nothing wrong with burying a St. Joseph statue upside down as some people do when they are selling their house. I look at it the same way I look at other religious rituals, less as performing the suggested ritual to exact specifications and more as a leap of faith, believing that St. Joseph will pray for us if we we ask him to intercede for us.

Francis X. Weiser pointed out in his book, “The Handbook of Christian Feasts and Customs”, that if these rituals are practiced in the right spirit, that is, based on the belief that the saints pray and intercedes for us, and without what he calls “unreasonable superstition”, our belief in the saints’ patronage and intercession provides “great consolation in temporal and spiritual need”.

We all know that there are other factors involved in selling a house fast and at a good price such as the state of the economy, a private sale as against using a real estate agent , etc. But I believe that when it comes to praying for a house to be sold quickly at the right price, it has a lot to do with one’s unwavering faith, not in the rituals one performs.

While I believe that performing a ritual is a good reinforcement for our faith, what really matters the most is having the faith that God hears and and answers our prayers always in His own time and in His own way, and that the saints are there to pray and intercedes for us if we ask them.

    Pray and Have Faith

You pray day and night with deep faith, but God does not seem to hear you. You remain jobless, your friend remains seriously ill and the man of your dreams is nowhere in sight. What should you do?

You may think you should do nothing because if you continue praying, God may think you lack faith. Or you may think that God is teaching you the virtue of patience so you should just accept His silence with stoic resignation.

Continuing to pray longer and harder, you hope (not trust) that God will eventually answer those prayers. Jesus implied persistence in the parable of the man who kept knocking on his neighbor’s door in the middle of the night asking for bread, until the neighbor got up and gave him the bread to make him go away (Luke 11: 5-8). His persistent action produced the desired response. In the parable about the widow, she kept returning to an unjust judge begging for justice. She wore away at him until he relented and granted justice (Luke 18: 2-5).

Sometimes praying seems like you are nagging God. You hope he will eventually answer and grant your heart’s desire. Pray persistently and you will get what you want. But is that really what Jesus was saying? Will God grant your request just to get rid of you therefore allowing him to attend to countless others who are demanding His attention?

Surely, you know God is not like that. Just remember Jesus who personifies the character of God in the flesh. The Bible shows various accounts of Him always ready to help the needy, hearing their cries and showing compassion. The truth is God always hears and answers prayers. At times, He immediately responds to a prayer with a resounding ‘Yes’ but there are also times when He responds differently in spite of persistent praying.

Still, have no doubt that God wants you to pray persistently. Why? Let’s look at the life of the apostle Paul. He had what he referred to as “a thorn in the flesh” (2 Corinthians 12:7). He didn’t say what it was but it must have been a chronic and debilitating problem which at times kept him from doing his work. He prayed more than once for God to take this ‘thorn’ away. But did he get what he prayed for? No!

Yet, Paul got something better. Because he persistently prayed, he heard God’s voice and found out God’s will. He heard God say to him, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.”(2 Corinthians: 9) Further, Paul realized that his ‘thorn in the flesh’ kept him from being conceited. He had such wonderful spiritual experiences and preaching prowess that it would have been hard not to brag about them. His ‘thorn’ kept him humble, however. He was always aware of his weakness and knew that whatever he achieved was God’s doing, not his.

Returning to God repeatedly in prayer keeps the lines of communication open. It allows God the opportunity to communicate with you. In the silence of prayer it provides the opportunity to hear God speak. Many times it is after repeated praying that the words no longer come. This is the time when you stop talking that you will hear God in the silence.

Persistent prayer affords God the opportunity to give you the solutions you seek through the silence. You may have your own idea of what the solution should be, which guides you as you continue to pray. Your solution may not be God’s answer to the problem at hand. There are times when God bends your will and allows the broken spirit to step forward. It is in times of prayer that you soon realize that letting go is the answer that lets God work miracles in your life. God will reshape your desires and show the sensible resolution.

Pray persistently because you know the communications lines are open and God is listening. Actively speak with God to open the way for resolutions to come back to you. Do not lose heart. Keep praying and hold onto your faith. Hold on to the greatest opportunity by allowing God to work through you, in you and with you.

Pray persistently for the right reasons. Experience God’s presence, goodness, mercy and power as He touches your life!

What is a Novena and How to Pray It

What is a Novena and how do you pray it? The word “Novena” was derived from the Latin word “novem”, which is translated in English as nine. Hence, it is usually prayed for nine consecutive days to prepare for a feast day or for an urgent or special prayer intention.

Some novenas are prayed for nine consecutive weeks and the day of the week when it is prayed depends on the day associated with a devotion to a particular saint. For instance, a weekly novena to St. Joseph is usually done on a Wednesday since this is the day traditionally associated with devotions to him.

There are also novenas which are done over nine months, and usually on the First Friday of each month. Some novenas are even hourly and a good example is the novena to the Infant Jesus of Prague which is prayed for just a day for nine consecutive hours.

There are also novenas which are not restricted to 9 hours, days, weeks or months. Some are 30-day novenas like the 30-day novena to St. Joseph.

The praying of a novena apparently was derived from the Holy Scriptures. In Acts 1:14, Jesus asked His disciples to pray together in the upper room and so they prayed for nine consecutive days, ending in Pentecost or the Descent of the Holy Spirit.

Praying a novena is simple. Instructions are provided in novena prayer booklets and even online. Some are so simple that all you have to do is pray a short prayer, mention your prayer intention and pray it again the following day up to nine days.

Some novenas are long and contain various prayers. Usually, there is an opening prayer and different prayers each day or week. Some also incorporate the Lord’s Prayer, the Hail Mary and Glory Be, Act of Contrition and other traditional Catholic prayers.

So anyone can pray a novena if he/she desires to. Examples of well-known novenas are those to the Mother of Perpetual Help and the Sacred Heart. Many people say that these novenas are efficacious. But whatever novena you are praying, remember to pray it from the heart. God always see what’s inside our hearts and answers prayers in His own way and in His own time.
