    Storing Large Items Checklist

    On January 24, 2009
    Categories: Environment
    by Amy Nutt

There are times in which we have to store large items. We may not have room for them in our homes, storage sheds, and garages. That means it is time to rent public storage space or to somehow make some room. It can seem like such an incredible feat. Actually, it can seem like an impossible feat. That is why you have to be rather methodical in how you go about this endeavor.

Before you even write down your checklist, you have to make sure you have help if you need it so that you can customize your checklist the way you need to. How you construct your list depends on what you’re moving and what your particular situation is. Just make sure that you have everything covered and that you abide by your checklist so that you can avoid as many obstacles as possible.

So here is your checklist: - Whether you’re storing your large items somewhere on your property or elsewhere, you need to measure them. This is so you can make sure you leave enough storage room.

    - You also need to get an idea of the weight so that you know how many people it will take to move the items and what tools you will need to make the move. It may be something that needs a dolly or another type of cart to move it.

    - Clear out the space that you need to store the item. This can be a great opportunity to throw away those things that you don’t need anymore.

    - Once you have cleared out a space or you have rented a public or self storage space, it is time to make the move.

    - If you must use a truck, make sure you have a ramp that you can use or some sort of hydraulic lift to get the large items in the truck. If you don’t have a truck of your own, you can rent one.

    - After you have loaded the items in the truck, it is then time to make your move. Once you get to your destination, you have to be very careful unloading the items.

    - If you’re storing the items on your property, make sure you clear out a path between where the items are and the place in which you’re storing them. This is so you don’t hit any unexpected bumps and so that no one trips.

    - Once you have your large item to its destination, you can then cover it with a furniture pad or a sheet. This is so dust and other harmful elements that may be present don’t become an issue. Storage buildings are climate controlled now, but if dust is a concern, you can still cover your items.

In the meantime, make sure you take safety into account. Look into back supports so that you don’t hurt yourself when lifting. If you’re using a dolly, a palate jack, or another sort of cart, make sure all the parts are working so that you don’t find yourself in a dangerous situation. You also want to make sure you use straps where appropriate. Many people are injured annually because of large items falling over onto them. If an item over 500 pounds falls onto a person, they can actually die of asphyxiation, so make sure everything is secure when it is in transit.

When you are finished following your checklist, you’ll be glad that you created it because it helps move things along seamlessly. In other words, a big job is made a lot easier.

Continuing Care: Is It Right For You?

    On January 17, 2009
    Categories: Health
    by Amy Nutt

Not everyone is cut out to pursue a career in continuing care. It requires a special temperament and personality to withstand the unique challenges and pressures that the caregiver will be subjected to. So how do you know if you have the right personality for the job, preferably before you start down this career path? This is an area where personality and ability are both extremely important.

Many medical professionals avoid this area because it requires a dedication that just doesn`t suit everyone. Looking after someone for a long period of time just isn`t the right way to go for everyone, so you`ll want to be sure that it`s the right path for you. There are a few characteristics that are common throughout the continuing care community. If you have these, then chances are, this is the right line of work for you.

Compassion: Without this, you`ll fail. It takes a compassionate heart to spend long hours caring for someone who is unable to look after themselves. If you have always enjoyed helping people and feeling useful, then this is a good indication that you`ll enjoy enrolling in a continuing care program.

Strength: Not just physical, though this is quite useful, as well, when you are lifting a full grown adult into the tub. However, mental strength is also necessary. You need to be able to deal with situations that may not be very comfortable, for you or the patient. It can be embarrassing for a teen boy to be helped onto the toilet, for example, and you`ll need to deal with thi

Patience: If you are an impatient person, chances are long term care isn`t a good place to work. This is a career that requires long hours of doing very little, simply being present in case your patient needs help. It can involve repetitive tasks, like checking heart rate and blood pressure, reading the same book over and over and hours doing tasks that would normally take a few minutes, like feeding a patient or helping someone get from one room to another. Patience is essential.

Friendliness: Continuing care involves long periods of time spent with the same patient. Unlike regular hospital care where you only see a patient for a few hours or days and never really get to know them, this career will leave you with more than enough time to get to know the people you work with. A callous attitude won`t work well, though many patients, particularly those in hospice care, will be resistant to you. A friendly attitude can go a long ways.

It can be mentally and physically exhausting working with people in long term care. You`ll be working with the elderly, the terminally ill and those who have been incapacitated in some way. It can take a toll on your personal life if you aren`t careful, so you also need to know when to take a break. You won`t be able to continue indefinitely and it`s important to be able to separate work from personal life.

Continuing care is not the ideal career for everyone. However, if you are compassionate, friendly and strong mentally and physically, with the ability to separate the life you lead on your off hours from your work, then it could be a good fit for you. The world needs people who are willing to participate in long term care, so this is an area that will always be open to more workers. It`s a good field to go into if you find that you have the right personality.

    Public Relations Integral for Business

    On December 27, 2008
    Categories: Public Relations
    by Amy Nutt

Public relations Polaris is an absolutely integral part of any businesses recipe for success, in fact, a well thought out and properly enacted public relations plan can be the single most important part of a company’s marketing - and aside from a good product and hard working employees, the most important part of running a business.

Public relations will determine exactly how your company is viewed or perceived in the public eye. Current and potential customers like to be ensured that they are, or will be patronizing a company that cares. A public relations department can organize a plan of attack to let the consumer know that your company cares about people and the environment, and about any other burgeoning social issues. A good PR department will also make the public aware that your company has a new product on the horizon and why they have to be first in line to purchase it, or that your company is branching out to offer new services and how that will make you stronger and more capable of handling their needs as consumers.

Yet another great facet and important role of a public relations department is damage control. If something, anything goes wrong and the public is made aware that the problem arose from one of your company’s employee’s actions or due to a particular policy - a good PR department will be the first one on the scene to correct it. Writing releases for apology or correction of error, along with releases stating the fact that new employees and procedures are in place to prevent any future problems can often save a companies reputation in the public eye.

    Inside or Out?

Many companies have their very own public relations departments, made up of what could be any number of employees who are responsible for a wide variety of duties including: producing eye catching press kits, writing poignant press releases, organizing charitable events and contributions and some general damage control.

This is usually the best option for large companies with big budgets in place for advertising and payroll. A good full time PR department is great if ever there are cases of an emergency that needs to be dealt with immediately.

Companies that don′t have their own public relations department, but that realize just how important the proper approach to and implementation of public relations can be, will often enlist the help of a third party public relations firm to take care of that end of the business for them.

This second option can work quite well for a company that doesn′t want to keep several full time employees on staff (having to take care of employee salaries, vacation and health benefits), when they can temporarily employee a service to do the job for them. Many reputable and successful public relations firms can bring quite a cost for the service that they provide, but often the results that are yielded from a good public relations campaign can certainly outweigh the cost of enlisting a firm to provide the work.

A third option is for a company to employ regular employees to handle the basic issues of a public relations department - to generate the thoughts and ideas behind the advertisements and new product launches, but then hire freelance professional to take care of the artistic side of things (the graphics, design and writing).

Regardless of whether a company employs their own full time public relations department, enlists a third party to do the work or uses a combination of in house people and freelancers to get the job done - public relations is an enormous part of whether or not a company will succeed. Good public relations is the recipe for success while poorly thought out, improperly enacted or missing public relations can be an almost lethal detriment.

Temp Agencies: What to Look For

    On November 22, 2008
    Categories: Education
    by Amy Nutt

Whether you are a job seeker or a major corporation, there are certain qualities one should look for when trying to locate a temp agency to service your needs.

    Just what are these qualities?

    1. Reputation

There are many upstarts that come and go, but the hallmark of a great company is staying power. The best hr consulting firms have been around and know what the market trends are in regards to employment opportunities. They also know what jobseekers and business want and can consistently bring the two together.

    2. References

All business, no matter their nature, should have a database of individuals who can give feedback on the performance of the company. It is your right as a business owner or potential employee to ask about these references. Be leery of any company that doesn’t appear to be forthcoming in regards to this information.

    3. Quality control

The best temp agencies utilize tried and true methods to assess the abilities of potential job candidates. They also screen businesses so they know workers are going to be in a safe and beneficial job environment. Both career seekers and companies often feel comfortable knowing that a screening process in place that protects both party’s interests.

    4. Attentive to needs

A great business knows that they have to be attentive to the needs of their client. Noteworthy temp agencies understand these fundamental principles and work hard to answer questions and return calls in a timely fashion. If you find that you can’t get the recruiter or the contact liaison on the phone, or fall into the voice mail run around trap one time too often, you may need to find a temp agency that is more diligent in providing quality e-service.

    5. Ethical and up front

There are horror stories on both sides of the fence when it comes to hr companies that have not been on the up and up. On the corporate end, some staffing firms have sent over less than qualified candidates to fill positions just because they are looking to fulfill a quota. On the flipside, workers who have expressly stated what they are looking for are bombarded with calls and offers for positions that do not fit their qualifications. This is due to the fact that recruiters only get paid when they place someone. This fact also means some of them knowingly try to place individuals in a job they are ill suited for. Investigate the agency to make sure that this is not a common practice within their firm.

    6. Online/Offline Presence

Any agency worth its salt will have a web presence - and a big one at that. You should be able to contact them online and research them online. Beware of companies who are difficult to find on the Internet as they could be a fly-by-night service with no viable background in temporary staffing.

There should also be free standing building that you can visit to talk to the recruiter face to face. This can also help assure you of the legitimacy of the company.

If you can check all of the above items off your list you have found a worthwhile hr consulting firm.

To get the most out of your temp agency interaction, be sure you know what you want prior to an in office visit. Focused workers and employers are more apt to get precisely what they are looking for if they seriously consider what they desire from a working relationship.

In the end, the true beauty of utilizing temp agencies is the variety they can bring to workers and the time saving benefits they deliver to busy companies.

This is why consulting firms have been around for so long, and why, no matter where the job market turns, they will always be a blessed necessity.

    Dinosaur Extinction: One Giant Mystery

    On October 29, 2008
    Categories: Science
    by Amy Nutt

Many different species in the history of life on this planet have simply ceased to be. Gone but not forgotten these strange animals leave evidence of their existence entombed in the sedimentary layers of the earth’s crust. As fascinating as these fossilized discoveries are, what’s even more fascinating is the mystery of what happened to them.

The dinosaur’s story is certainly the most compelling of all the extinction records. Giants that reigned over the earth their disappearance is both perplexing and intriguing.

New theories are formulated as new scientific discoveries are made but even the experts in the field cannot agree on the facts behind the end of the dinosaur era.

Buried deep in the past, the only clues remaining, point to a number of different theories.

    Asteroids Or Volcanoes?

Approximately 65.5 million years ago an event occurred that caused the mass extinction of about 70% of the earth’s animal and plant species in a relatively short geological time period. It is called the Cretaceous-Tertiary extinction event or the K-T extinction event. A thin band, a geological signature called the K-T boundary, identifies this.

Around the world dinosaur remains (of the non-avian variety) have only been discovered below this K-T boundary. This points to the conclusion that dinosaurs became extinct either right before the event or because of it.

Luis and Walter Alvarez, along with scientists from the University of California during the late seventies were studying closely the K-T boundary in Gubbio, Italy when they made an interesting discovery. In a clay layer at the boundary point they found 30 times the normal level of a rare element called Iridium. Such high levels of Iridium, it has been theorized, could have only come from two sources: either asteroids or violent volcanic activity.

    The Asteroid

Many in the scientific community have postulated this impact event theory. The theory suggests that a large asteroid fell to earth and created a cloud of dust and other aerosols that blocked the sun’s rays for up to a year. This reduction in sunlight radically affected plant and animal life causing a change to the atmosphere. At the time of impact a pulse of intense radiation killed many species and the resulting climate change and global firestorms decimated the rest.Dinosaurs, because of their size, were the first to succumb.

    Volcanic Activity

The Deccan Traps, located in western India, formed at the end of the Cretaceous period, the same time the dinosaurs disappeared from earth. The Traps are a bi-product of violent volcanic eruptions. This theory postulates that the volcanic activity at the time would have released massive amounts of sulfuric aerosols and ash into the atmosphere again causing a major shift in the earth’s climate. A shift that the dinosaurs were not equipped to survive.

    Ice Age

Another theory relies on the idea of a major drop in temperature that caused the dinosaurs to die out while allowing the warm-blooded, more insulated mammals to survive. In this case all the plant, animal and marine life that could not adapt to the plummeting temperatures became extinct. A number of scientists pair this theory with the asteroid theory, claiming it was the asteroid that triggered the deep freeze.

There are many plausible explanations and scientific theories regarding the extinction of dinosaurs. New scientific evidence is discovered all the time, which supports one hypothesis or another, however, the truth is that we really don’t know what ended the reign of these giants of the prehistoric world.

It is a mystery that may remain until the moment of our extinction.

Immersion Is the Key To Learning English

    On October 15, 2008
    Categories: Education
    by Amy Nutt

English is a challenging language to learn. Those who try to learn English find that the many grammatically rules are often broken, so the minute you think you have enough knowledge to speak the language well, you come across an exception to the rule. Add to that the fact that people rarely speak English correctly, and you are facing an incredibly tough challenge. The best way to learn English is to immerse yourself in the language. You can use the best online English school, pass every English Lesson, and know everything about English grammar, but you will not be able to speak well unless you surround yourself with the language.

Surround Yourself with Good English Speakers

Even if you are trying to learn English online, you need to surround yourself with people who not only speak English, but also speak English well. If you know people that live near you who are native English speakers, spend time with them, and ask them to speak English when you do. If this is not possible, use your online English school as a place to go to surround yourself with English speakers and text written in English. Listen to recordings of people speaking English or talk to English speakers on the phone. This will help you learn not only proper grammar, but also correct pronunciation.

    Learn a Variety of Words

If you want to be a good English speaker who can speak like a native when needed, you need to learn to speak using a variety of terms and vocabulary words. The more limited your vocabulary is, the more like a foreigner you will sound when you speak. Focus on the traditional vocabulary found in your English lessons, but also learn from native speakers. Learn how to use slang terms properly, as this is a key aspect of speaking like a native speaker. Avoid using too much slang, though, as this is tacky and can make it look as though you are trying too hard.

As you learn the language, focus not only on the words and their meanings, but also the way the words come together to make phrases. For instance, the word “kick″ can mean many different things depending on how it is used in a phrase. When you say, “He kicked the ball,” you are using the word as a verb that means to strike the ball with the foot. On the other hand, you could say, “I get a kick out of that T.V. show.” This means that you enjoy the T.V. show, and has nothing to do with striking something with a foot. Learning how phrases come together in English will come with continued submersion in the language.

    Start Thinking in English

Thinking in a language is the only way to truly learn it. When you can start thinking in English, you will start getting a true grasp of the language. If you have to take every English phrase you hear and translate it mentally into your native tongue, or if you must take your native tongue and translate it into English in your mind before you speak, you will find it difficult to truly grasp the language’s grammar.

    Devote Enough Time to Immersion

The more time you can spend immersed in English, either through spending time with native speakers, listening to recordings of English being spoken, or reading the language, the faster you will successfully Learn English. Every chance you get, interact with the language. If you are on the Internet, search English sites. If you are reading the newspaper, choose an English publication. Simply logging in to your online English school or heading to your daily English lesson is not sufficient. You must learn to think in English, and that only happens by spending quality time with the language every single day.

    Wedding Flowers That Withstand Heat

    On September 10, 2008
    Categories: Weddings
    by Amy Nutt

Often the best days for a wedding are warm, hot even, and while this might be good for the bride and groom, it can wreak havoc on delicate flowers. Choosing a wedding flower that will stand up to the heat and look great throughout the ceremony and even long afterwards can be hard. You want something that is beautiful and fit for a bride, but still sturdy enough to hang in there, even in high temperatures.

    What to Look For

Good wedding flowers are delicate looking, but not actually that fragile. It will withstand the summer heat and look terrific doing it. You have enough worries and stresses on your wedding day, flowers should definitely not be one of them, so select hardy flowers from the very beginning and you’ll be able to focus on more important things, like actually getting married.

Here are some of the characteristics to look for in a heat-resistant wedding flower.

    - Thick, waxy petals are best. They tend to be stiffer and hold the moisture in longer than thinner petals which tend to shrivel and wilt in the heat. The thicker the petal, the stiffer it will be, making it more resistant to wilting. - Stiff leaves help with heat resistance, too. Leaves contain a lot of moisture that can be wicked up to the bloom and the greenery helps enhance the color of the wedding flowers. Wilted leaves make the entire bouquet look sickly, so thicker, waxier leaves are the best option. - Sturdy stems keep flowers upright. While the florist can place flower stems in plastic straws to help keep them upright when the heat threatens to send them drooping downwards, but it’s best to choose the right flowers with sturdy, thick stems that are strong enough to stand up even when slightly dried out. - Full blooms stay fresh longer. Flowers that aren’t just a few petals will last longer. Look for ruffled petals or multiple rounds, such as with a mum or carnation. These flowers do very well with holding in the moisture needed to survive a hot day, even when not placed in a vase of water.

If you have the budget, tropical flowers tend to be far better than our native blooms when it comes to withstanding the hot interior of a church or reception hall. They are grown in heat, so you’ll find that they are quite hardy when it comes to summer weddings. Most tropical flowers are very elegant, as well, so they make for very lovely bouquets and centerpieces.

Flowers like orchids, lilies and dahlias are all great ones for a wedding flower. They hold up to the heat very well and can take long drought periods, thanks to their hardy leaves and petals that retain moisture even in stifling conditions.

Your florist will also be able to recommend a more heat resistant wedding flower or two. The ideal would be a flower that you love the look of, which combines beauty with functionality. For a summer wedding, how well the flowers will stand up to the heat is a very important consideration. There is nothing more stressful on your wedding day than discovering that all your blooms are wilting away in the intense heat.

Choose your wedding flower carefully. You don’t want bouquets that look awful by the time you are ready to walk down the aisle. Tropical flowers, those with waxy, thick petals and leaves and any flower that is bushy and full of petals tend to be alright and will look great throughout the entire day.

    Common Wedding Day Superstitions

    On September 05, 2008
    Categories: Weddings
    by Amy Nutt

Your wedding day is special and it`s a one of a kind experience, which is probably why a lot of superstitions have grown up around this momentous event. Most of them have to do with the bride, perhaps because of the huge amount of pressure on the bride to have the perfect wedding day.

Here are a few of the wedding superstitions that have developed over the years:

    The Bridal Shower

Everything the bride says while opening presents will come back to her on her Toronto wedding night. It could be good to be careful with this one . . . you never know! Having the same phrases repeated on the wedding night could be a good or bad thing, depending.

For good luck, the first gift opened should be the first gift used. There are a few superstitions surrounding the gifts given at a bridal shower, such as the giver of the third present opened will have a baby.

    The Dress

The whole wedding outfit must not be tried on until the actual day of the wedding. This common superstition is due to the fact that it was thought to bring bad luck on the bride. If she put on all her wedding garb before the wedding . . . she might not be married after all!

Green, yellow, pink and red wedding dresses are considered bad form. According to an old marriage rhyme, these four colors of wedding dresses would bring assorted miseries on the married couple`s life and they wouldn`t be happy.

It`s bad luck for the groom to see the bride in her dress on their wedding day. This is a pretty strong superstition that most people follow to this day.

    The Church

Seeing a pig run across the road on the way to the church. This is considered to be very bad news for the wedding party and could foretell a cancelled wedding or a terrible marriage. Interestingly, meeting a black cat on your wedding day actually signifies good luck.

Meeting a monk or a nun outside the church. According to this superstition, you are doomed to a marriage of barrenness and will be dependent on charity if you run across a nun or a monk on your way to the church.

Wed on a Saturday for no luck at all. While you may not get bad luck by tying the knot on a Saturday, you won`t have good luck either, so you may want to try Monday (health) or Wednesday (best of all), instead.

    The Ceremony

Dropping the ring means the marriage won`t last. While this traditionally applies to the groom`s clumsy fingers, it`s been turned into a uni-sex superstition.

A penny in the bride`s shoe will bring wealth to the marriage. This is the often skipped part of the old “something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue” adage.

Marrying when the hands on the clock are on their way down is bad luck. It`s considered far better to marry between the half hour and the hour, when the hands are moving back up. Otherwise, your marriage will always be going downhill.

    The Wedding Night

The first person to fall asleep on the wedding night will also be the first to die. This is a superstition that obviously has no basis in fact, but it is still remarked upon . . . usually by the person who fell asleep last!

It`s not likely that any of these superstitions is based on truth, but they are definitely interesting to learn about. Many of them are still alive and well to this day and are still respected by most brides. While they may not be true, Toronto weddings superstitions certainly show no signs of going away just yet.

Who Should Have Around the Clock Auto Club Roadside Assistance?

    On August 24, 2008
    Categories: Cars and Trucks
    by Amy Nutt

Almost anyone who drives knows what roadside assistance is. For those who don′t, it is emergency road assistance given to the driver in the case that he or she runs out of gas, blows a tire, breaks down, or is locked out of their car. The service will provide a specified amount of gas that should get the individual to the next gas station, will put on the spare tire if the tire blows, will provide towing for a specified distance if the car breaks down, and will provide locksmith service if the keys are locked in the car. In other words, having a roadside assistance means it is difficult to get stranded when away from home.

The above scenarios certainly reveal how important it is that a person has roadside assistance. It is easy for someone to say that they never run out of gas, that they don’t believe their tire will go flat, or they never lock their keys in their car. There are even some individuals so claim that their car is a good car and will never break down. The truth is that these things happen to anyone and everyone. It isn’t a measure of intelligence or how careful an individual is. Everyone who drives has or will experience all of these things at one point and, in a world that is becoming increasingly dangerous, it is important to have roadside assistance that can cover you all through the day and all night long.

Who should have 24/7 roadside assistance

Those who frequently travel are the perfect candidates for around the clock roadside assistance. A roadside assistance service that doesn’t provide coverage 24 hours each day could definitely put an individual in a pickle. For example: A person is traveling after 9:00 p.m. and they have a tire blowout on the highway. They take out their cellular phone to call their roadside assistance service to find that their hours are between 9:00 a.m. ad 9:00 p.m. This person is now stuck and their only choice is to pay someone a lot of money to come put on their spare or start walking. It is dangerous to wait for a good Samaritan to come along the way and volunteer to put on the spare tire. It is also too dangerous to walk. Had this person had a roadside assistance service that was an around the clock service, this would not be a problem.

Then there are those who travel frequently overnight. A service that is not around the clock isn’t going to benefit them at all. Actually, it would be pointless to have. If something happened in the middle of the night, they would have to call someone else who would charge them even more for overnight service or they would have to do something dangerous such as sleep in the car or start walking to find help or a hotel.

So when asking the question of who should have around the clock auto clubroadside assistance, it is fair to say that anyone who is need of roadside assistance should go for a service that will help them any time of the day or night. We cannot predict when we are going to be driving. A person may have to leave their home in the middle of the night and end up locking themselves out of their car. It is easier and cheaper to receive locksmith assistance from the roadside assistance company than it is to call a locksmith in the middle of the night on your own and spend $30 or more dollars. Roadside assistance is more convenient and it is cheaper. There is also no question as to why an around the clock auto club roadside assistance is the way to go.
